World Water Day 2021: MEDREC promotes Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG) through innovative projects

Recognizing the importance of water resources and the challenges we face in preserving them, MEDREC has been working since 2018 to implement projects aimed at developing water resources and promoting sustainable land management systems.

For example, the REFAT (Renewable Energy for Agricultural and Rural Development in Tunisia) project, implemented by MEDREC since 2018, aims to promote renewable energy and sustainable water management for agriculture, as well as to install photovoltaic drinking water distribution systems in the following rural areas: Sousse, Kairouan, Gafsa, Sidi Bouzid, Kasserine, and Gabès.

Furthermore, to ensure the sustainability of the agricultural sector, MEDREC has selected several target regions in Tunisia to host innovative initiatives to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals as part of the ICAPT (Implementation of Climate-Smart Agricultural Practices in Tunisia) project. This project, launched in February 2021, aims to implement effective and sustainable solutions to optimize land use, by optimizing water recovery and adopting energy-efficient practices, in public irrigated areas downstream of the Nebhana dam.

Furthermore, as part of the EauSIRIS project (New Water and Soil Management Strategy and Implementation of Green Technologies for Climate-Resilient Agriculture), led by MEDREC and scheduled to begin in late 2021, the following topics are planned to be addressed:

– Securing and diversifying water resources on a small and medium scale;
– Soil conservation and adaptation to extreme climate conditions;
– Use of smart farming techniques and renewable energies to streamline water and energy consumption.
