EAUSIRIS organizes a workshop on agriculture in the face of climate change in Tunisia and Sicily

Under the aegis of His Excellency Mr. Abdelmonem Belati, Minister of Agriculture, Hydraulic Resources and Fisheries, the Higher School of Engineers of Medjez El Bab is organizing, within the framework of the EauSIRIS project (New Strategy for Water and Soil Management and Implementation of Green Technologies for Climate-Resilient AgRIculture) the mid-term workshop of the project on the theme of “Agriculture in the face of climate change in Tunisia and Sicily” on May 10, 2023, at the ESIM premises.

A vital sector and one of the pillars of the Tunisian and Sicilian economies, agriculture today faces several challenges for water, energy and food security. Indeed, water shortages and soil degradation, intensified by the effects of climate change, require the adoption of measures for the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. In addition, the heavy dependence of the agricultural sector on fossil fuels makes it vulnerable and increases its energy bill.

The EauSIRIS project thus proposes the implementation of a new multidimensional and effective strategy for the promotion of sustainable agriculture, resilient to the effects of climate change and less energy-intensive.

The mid-term workshop of the project welcomes, in addition to the Tunisian and Sicilian partners, operators from the water, soil and energy sectors, during this agricultural season characterized by a historic drought in terms of severity, territorial extent and its duration. Thus, the workshop would be an opportunity to discuss the Water – Energy – Agriculture Nexus.

This workshop features renowned speakers and presentations from project partners on the progress of their activities. Two sessions are planned, one on water resource management and the other on energy and technological solutions for sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture.
