MEDREC finalize its participation to GNESD RETs II theme ( 2007-06-12 )

      I.        The study entitled « RETs II final report » was finalized in agreement with GNESD in May 28, 2007. This study started in January 2006 with the help of an external expert. It was aiming to identify 2 renewable energies niches in Tunisia and to propose solutions for their development.

MEDREC task was divided into 2 parts:

  1. The identification of 2 niches and the barriers for their development

The 2 chosen niches were:

a.     Wind and solar pumping for small scale farms irrigation

b.     Rationalizing he use of Firewood for traditional bread baking

2.    Proposal of solutions for the development of these two niches

a.     Wind and solar pumping for small scale farms irrigation

The principal proposed axes are the following:

  •  Facilitation of access to credits to finance solar and wind pumping systems through the installation of a suitable financing mechanism.
  • Elaboration of communication program to be oriented in direction of the Ministry of agriculture, CRDAs, NGOs, farmers and rural population, as well as other operators in this field.
  • Elaboration of training program to be set up for equipment installers and maintenance operators.
  • Setting tools to help decision-making and actors to choose the optimal mode of pumping according to the characteristics of a given farm.
  • Finally, it is proposed that these actions are at first tested and validated, within the framework of a pilot program concentrated on a limited geographical area.

b.     The rationalizing of the use of Firewood for traditional bread baking

The proposed strategy concerns setting up efficient mechanisms for the promotion and distribution of much more Tabouna lids in rural areas. This scaling up of lids diffusion is not a technical issue, but needs efforts for more organization, more dialog between partners, in order to set up simple and adapted financing support mechanisms.

II.        Following the finalization of GNESD study, MEDREC is willing to elaborate a more precise study aiming at the clarification of real project and the needed conditions for its success. MEDREC is actually preparing terms of references of the mentioned study.
