Study on assessing the potential of bio-energy in Tunisia

Bio-energy is a solution to cope with oil prices explosion and allow developing countries to ensure their energy independence. In order to achieve this, a study was conducted by the National Agronomic Institute of Tunisia (INAT) in favour of the MEDREC under the ANME in order to evaluate the various existing bio-energy resources in Tunisia and their potential for bio-energy production.

Biogas is the most appropriate form of bio-energy due to the availability of biomass in Tunisia and that it requires no major investments like other forms of bio-energy.

The study was based on three phases: data collection and analysis, Development of the National bio-energy potential and Bio-energy Development Program.

Following the report of the study it emerges that biogas is the most appropriate form of bio-energy due to the availability of biomass in Tunisia and that it requires no major investments like other forms of bio-energy.

Several projects for bioenergy production has been made in Tunisia: for biogas production (achievement of a demonstration plant for the production of biogas in the field of cattle farming and a second pilot unit for processing manure by anaerobic fermentation in the vocational agricultural training centre, Sidi Thabet, pre-feasibility study of biogas plants in the region of Bizerte and therapeutic farm in Sidi Thabet, etc ...), for firewood (diffusion of metal lids for the preparation of bread "tabouna", recovery of by-products through the implementation of facilities for energy substitution in olive products: pilot Unit of Boughrara (Sfax) ...), for Biodiesel as well as for cogeneration Bio-energy is a solution to cope with oil prices explosion and allow developing countries to ensure their energy independence. In order to achieve this, a study was conducted by the National Agronomic Institute of Tunisia (INAT) in favour of MEDREC under the ANME assistance in order to evaluate the various existing bio-energy resources in Tunisia and their potential of production.
