Mediterranean Food and Agro Industry Applications of Solar Cooling technologies MEDISCO

MEDISCO is an innovative project in the cold chain in food industry financed by the European Commission which aims to design, test, and optimize the concept of solar thermal cooling for the food industry in the region of the Mediterranean basin.

This project, designed by MEDREC and supported by MIETM, as part of a consortium including POLIMI, ISE, ROBUR, TECSOL, ADEME, GCC, CIMNE, ANME, EEAA and CDER, is aiming to:

  • Contribute to the development of a technology with low environmental impact and economically viable for solar cooling in the food industry of the southern countries of the Mediterranean basin.
  • Develop and test experimental concepts and innovative cost-effective solar cooling.

The solar cooling system was installed and put into service for the winemaker society "Domaine Neferis" in Grombalia and the monitoring system has been properly calibrated. An energy management system was created to point out the support of actions targeting the rationalization of energy consumption, the promotion of renewable energies, and the substitution of energy. The results of the project has increased the knowledge and strengthened awareness of key players on the integration potential of solar technologies in the food industry in the region who have also contributed to next European activities related to this technology. At the regional level, the transfer of experience within the MEDISCO project will be highlighted through the Mediterranean Centre for Renewable Energy (MEDREC).
