Integration of solar thermal technology in the industrial sector

MEDREC, in collaboration with IMELS, has organized a training session in Milan for the development of regional competencies through the transfer of technologies and the dissemination of information in the field of renewable energy in the southern Mediterranean region for the profit of partner countries (Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and Egypt).

This training, which was held from July 11 to 15, 2011, aimed to the following abjectives:

  • Development of knowledge in the domain of industrial applications of solar thermal systems (technologies, instruments, and strategies) and the facilitation of exchanging experiences through the familiarization of utilized systems in the European industry.
  • Elaboration of feasibility studies about the integration of solar water heaters in various industrial applications, production of hot water and/or steam at different temperature levels to recognize what process could be adapted to the integration of solar technology and to identify optimal operating conditions.
  • Exchange of experiences with the technical visits on sites and meetings with the major operators working on the solar thermal industry in Italy.

A workshop was carried out on September 29th, 2011 to disseminate the feasibility studies and to propose an adequate funding mechanism. The major focus was on the cost-effectiveness of solar thermal integration and the current Tunisian political incentives for renewable energies and fossil fuels. Following the recommendations of the workshop, Italian side proposed to fund firstly a pilot project at Benetton.
