Projects / Electric Tunisian - Italian Interconnection

As part of its mission, the MEDREC is playing an important role in the realization of this project, which provides an electrical interconnection between Tunisia and Italy with a capacity of 1000 MW and a plant that will ensure the economic feasibility of project. The plant will have a capacity of 1,200 megawatt, 800 Megawatt will be for export to Italy via interconnection and 400 Megawatt will be for the local market. The proposed construction of the power plant will require the establishment of an electric cable DC submarine of 1000 megawatts (MW) power and a length of 160 km. This cable will be sized in 1000MW where 800 MW will be produced from the plant and the remaining 200 MW will be reserved for renewable energy.

The contribution of MEDREC to the Tunisian Italian electrical interconnection:

  • Organisation and financing of two major conferences with the participation of Tunisian Minister of Industry, Saglia Italian Vice Minister, the Director General of IMELS, CEO of STEG and the General Director of the World Bank "Maghreb" Middle East and North of the World Bank, the European investment Bank, the Director of the Mediterranean Solar Plan
  • Design, funding, and launch of three studies on RE concerning the electrical interconnection Tunisia- Italy
    • A technical study on the potential of renewable energies from non-programmable sources endurable by the Tunisian network
    • A study on the legislative conditions of exporting Renewable Energy from Tunisia to Italy
